Kettlebell Exercises
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011While most kettlebell exercises involve a wide variety of motions they fall into two primary categories. Those labeled grinds have slower, controlled movements and ballistic exercises are the ones that involve a fast swinging motion.
Grinds include bent knee lifts, squats, overhead presses, figure eights, windmills and Turkish get ups. Squats are an excellent kettlebell exercise for strengthening such areas as the gluts, quads, and hamstrings while the low windmill is a great movement involving the whole body. It builds strong obliques, shoulders, arms and strengthens the back while targeting balance and stability.
Any of these moves can become the foundation for the more energetic or powerful ballistic exercises. Ballistic kettlebell exercises are more explosive involving swings or combinations of movements such as swings along with presses and pushes. They involve not only the arms, but the hips and legs.
Swings are an excellent kettlebell exercise involving the entire body with the power of the swing literally coming from your hips. This is particularly true of the core muscles and lower body/hip-thrust motion. This movement is so powerful it forces the body to find stability in order to maintain balance. It is also a great workout for the shoulders and arms as well.
